Things missing from the character creation

Hello,
I am just wondering why certain things are missing from character creation. For instance when i try and make a barbarian, at level 3 i should be able to choose one of two paths, the it only lets me choose one. I also have a similar problem with the monk class. Am I doing something wrong or is this on purpose?
